She later attended the University of Georgia before transferring to Augusta University to study nursing at their Athens campus. She was a member of the AXΩ (Alpha Chi Omega) Sorority at the University of Georgia.
The suspected killer, Jose Antonio Ibarra, a 26-year-old unvetted immigrant from Venezuela, was arrested and charged with her murder. The incident has become a rallying cry for Republicans, highlighting concerns about the Biden administration’s handling of the U.S.-Mexico border amid a record surge of immigrants entering the country.
During his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden said: "Lincoln Riley, an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal, that's right."
Biden expressed regret for using the term "illegal" when referring to the suspected killer of Laken Riley. He clarified that he should have used the term “undocumented” instead. This moment underscores the sensitivity around immigration issues and the impact of language choices in public discourse.
